Monitoring Services

The two main functions of the monitoring service are to give clients a way to call a help number (caregiver, family member etc.) and/or for the help center to monitor the client and send an emergency response team, if and when necessary. Monitoring is carried out by Numactive’s ULC-listed emergency care center, so rather than outsourcing to a third-party company, like many do, it can customize monitoring and dispatch personnel to best suit client needs.

In the case of a fall or other emergency, clients can press the call button on the base or wearable device, to call the emergency number they provided during setup. After calling, the designated person can make a decision and help in anyway they see fit. In the case of an emergency that requires physical assistance, it is important to note that unlike other medical alert services, Numactive doesn’t send its caregivers to help when called, rather it sends the appropriate municipal police, fire department, or emergency personnel designated by client. After it receives a signal for help, the communication center will make every effort to notify the designated personnel and medical team as well as the person or family member listed to receive emergency notifications. The medical team will be informed of the client's medications, allergies, and medical conditions, as provided during the initial setup.

Additionally, trained operators are on call to handle all medical emergencies, and a health profile is kept for each client to provide information to medical personnel in the event of an emergency.

Product Features

Three different products are offered, all offering different features to fit various needs and lifestyles.

The most basic product, “alert home,” allows users to contact either a designated caregiver or emergency services for help, and different types of calls can be made by pressing either the “emergency” or “caretaker” button on the base-station, or the “emergency” button on the pendant. This product is ideal for users who spend most of their time at home, as the range between the pendant and the base is only up to 500 ft. “Alert plus,” which offers a 1000 ft. range, is ideal for users who spend frequent time in, as well as around, their homes, such as in the yard or driveway. Unlike alert home, alert plus also offers fire and carbon monoxide monitoring, which notifies users and caretakers about dangers, as well as two-way communication on both the base-station and pendant. So even if the user falls outside, as long as they are wearing the pendant, they can call the service center for help. The third product Numactive offers is the cloud-based “alert freedom”, and is for users who frequently travel, enjoy being outdoors, and lead an active lifestyle. Since the product is meant for people that leave the house often, it is a single pendant-like device that comes with GPS location services and a nationwide operating range. It also has fall-detection built in, so if it detects a lack of motion, a caregiver and the call center will be immediately notified.

The pendant offered with every plan is water-resistant so that it can be taken into the shower, and has a 24 hour battery backup, in case electricity should go out.

Installation Process

Whichever product you choose, installing a Numactive device is simple and straightforward. As the alert freedom device is a single product with no base station, it requires very little setup. Just a charge and an initial test call.

Alert home and alert plus take a bit more time, but can be set up in 3 steps that take less than 60 seconds. After receiving your device, you’ll want to place the base station in a central place of the home that is easy to access in the case of an emergency. This location should also be by a phone line and a power outlet. Plug the device’s AC adapter into the power outlet in the wall. Then, unplug your existing phone from the wall jack and plug it into the back of the Numactive base-station, into the input marked “phone.” Using the supplied phone cord, plug the larger end into the input on the back of the base-station marked “line”and then plug the smaller end into the phone jack in the wall. This way you’re able to use the Numactive device as well as your original phone. After you’ve completed the device setup, you’ll want to call the included toll-free number to activate your system. A representative will walk you through the activation procedure, after which you can press your personal help button and an operator will confirm your setup is complete.

When purchasing a Numactive device, it’s important to note that payment goes towards the rental of the device and that after the selected plan is over, the device must be returned to Numactive. In case you’re not satisfied with your device, you are entitled to receive a full refund if the device is returned in perfect condition within 10 days.

As far as pricing, costs vary depending on the product and plan selected — alert home, alert plus, or alert freedom — and which of the annual, quarterly, or monthly monitoring plans you choose. Though the monthly plan is a good option for those who aren’t sure how long they will want coverage for, the annual plan will give the greatest saving. The most basic plan, alert home, costs $29.00 per month annually, $34.99 per month quarterly, and $39.99 per month when billed monthly. The biggest difference between them all when it comes to costs, is that they each require a prepayment of a certain amount of months. Additionally, the annual and quarterly plans don’t incur the $50.00 activation fee, while the monthly plan does. The same differences go for the alert plus plan. This plan offers slightly more than the alert home plan, feature-wise, and its prices depend on the plan selected — $34.99 per month annually, $39.99 per month quarterly, and $44.99 per month when billed monthly. Alert freedom requires a 4-month prepayment upon shipment and then monthly billing begins. 1-,2-, and 3-year plans are offered as well as a flex plan for $49.99 per month. The 1- and 2-year plans have an activation fee of $100.00 and $50.00 respectively, the 3-year plan has no activation fee, and the flex plan has a fee of $150.00.

If you live in Southwestern Ontario, you can have a representative come to your home and install your device, for an additional cost. All products come with a lifetime warranty and may offer free shipping with a quarterly, annual, or 3-year freedom contract plan.
